Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G: A Masquerade-Themed Evening

OVERVIEW

One of Ravel’s final completed works, the Piano Concerto in G is a fitting testament to his unique genius—and pianist Ingrid Fliter’s profound musicianship and charisma is a perfect match for this breathtaking and colorful tour-de-force. The symphonic poem Winter Bells by Polina Nazaykinskaya is an ode to the whispers of nature and divine harmony, and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet acts as a masterclass for storytelling through music.

Utah Music Therapy & Harmony Music Therapy will be in the lobby to promote the connection between music and well-being, highlighting how it can support healthy habits and therapeutic practices.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MUSICPLAN YOUR VISIT

As a Masterworks Magnified program, audiences will be able to see the physical demands of Ravel’s Piano Concerto through up-close views of soloist Ingrid Fliter and orchestra musicians, projected on a giant IMAG video screen. The works will also be introduced with insights from the evening’s host, USUO Vice President of Education and Community Engagement Ben Kipp. Read on for special activities happening before and after the concert!

Romeo and Juliet Step into the world of lovers and enemies as we bring a masquerade, inspired by the fateful story of Romeo and Juliet, to our lobby. Whether you’re a Montague or a Capulet, dress to the nines and disguise your identity with a mask. (Abravanel Hall will be decked out, too!)
Don’t have a mask? Don’t worry—you’ll have the chance to make your own in the lobby before the performance.
“Potions” (beer and wine!) will be available for purchase.
Share out your memories with Romeo & Juliet-inspired photos at our “balcony” or “tombs” backdrops.
A post-concert Q&A session with composer Polina Nazaykinskaya—whose work “Winter Bells” represents the arduous journey of a traveler fighting his way through a deadly blizzard—promises an enlightening conclusion to this extraordinary evening.
