OVERVIEW
Step into a gallery of musical mastery as we perform Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's suite Pictures at an Exhibition. Composed in the wake of the loss of Mussorgsky’s dear friend—architect and artist Viktor Hartmann—this timeless work captures the essence of each of Hartmann’s sketches and paintings, and Mussorgsky’s remembrance of his friend, with breathtaking clarity and depth.
The first half of the program also displays Ravel’s unique ability to transform solo works into lush orchestral masterpieces, with the mesmerizing Une Barque sur l'océan (A Ship on the Ocean) and lively Alborada del gracioso (Morning Song of the Jester) from his suite Miroirs (Mirrors), followed by the whimsical charm of the fairytale suite Ma mère l'Oye (Mother Goose).
