A cursed sea captain, doomed to a life aboard a haunted ship, must find a faithful woman to release him from his eternal wanderings in Wagner’s 1843 opera about finding redemption through love.
German conductor Jun Märkl, a highly-respected interpreter of German repertoire who made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1998 and is a frequent conductor at the Vienna, Munich, and Berlin state operas, makes his Utah Opera conducting debut with these performances.
Inspired by a maritime legend, Wagner brings us a captain cursed to roam the seas for eternity with his phantom ship and ghostly crew. Every seven years he sets foot on shore in search of a faithful woman to release him from his torment. Will he find salvation in the devotion of Senta, or is her dedication beyond his grasp? Experience Wagner’s vivid, dramatic retelling of the legendary ghost seafarer in search of redemption through love.
